How to choose a therapist

Choosing a therapist can feel daunting. A few things matter more than the rest:

  1. Training — Look for someone who did substantial supervised client work during training — as a rough guide, at least ~200 supervised placement hours.
  2. Registration — Check they’re registered with a recognised body — e.g. BACP, UKCP, BABCP (for CBT) or NCPS — ideally one whose register is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Psychologists are regulated by the HCPC.
  3. Their own therapy — Many therapists have had significant personal therapy themselves, often over several years, which can deepen their work. It isn’t required in every approach, though — CBT and related trainings, for instance, don’t mandate it.
  4. How they feel to be with — You don’t have to adore your therapist, but you shouldn’t actively dislike them — a basic sense of safety and respect matters.
  5. It’s okay to change — If after a few sessions therapy feels consistently unhelpful or distressing, there’s nothing wrong with trying someone else. A good therapist will support that.
  6. Trust your gut — The relationship is the strongest predictor of helpful therapy, so look for rapport and a "good feeling" that you can work with this person.
